Shango scepter, Yoruba culture, Nigeria. H. 56cm

Beautiful ceremonial scepter, it represents Shango, god of war and thunder. He is prayed for his strength. He settles conflicts and punishes thieves.
The character is kneeling in a position imbued with strength and dignity. The face is beautiful, he is smiling, confident and mischievous. He knows the strength of the gods and with it he is invincible. His head is topped with a stylized representation of an axe, symbol of Shango. The patina is beautiful, traditionally composed of red wood powder (camwood) and shea butter. The wood is damaged in places but solid. Sold as is, see photos. A beautiful old and authentic collector's item. Circa 1940.
