“The Ethical Movement” is the Polish edition of a work by Walter L. Sheldon, one of the leading figures of the American Ethical Culture movement. This movement was founded in New York by Felix Adler. Its adherents maintained that the foundation of personal and social life could be an ethic independent of religious dogma, based on a sense of duty, respect for human dignity, and responsibility for the common good. Ethical societies organized lectures, Sunday schools for children, and educational and social activities. Over time, the movement spread beyond the United States, reaching Europe as well. The Polish edition was published in Łódź in 1899 and serves as an early testament to interest in this philosophy in Poland.

Walter Lorenzo Sheldon was born in 1858. He collaborated with Felix Adler at the New York Society for Ethical Culture and, upon Adler’s recommendation, became the head of the St. Louis Ethical Society, founded in 1886. He led the society until the end of his life: he gave lectures, ran a Sunday school for children—which opened in 1887—and expanded the society’s educational activities. He was the author of works on ethics, moral education, and the ideals of the ethical movement. He died in 1907.

Provenance: a clean piece, with no ownership marks.

This is a 19th-century Łódź print, an early Polish example of the reception of the American ethical culture movement, in a period half-leather binding. A must-have for researchers of the history of ethical thought and social movements at the turn of the century, as well as for collectors of 19th-century prints from Łódź.
