Sheppe, Word studies; Primary Book 1905 illustrated

"Word studies; Primary Book". By Edwin Samuels Sheppe, published by B. F. Johnson Publishing Company, Atlanta, Richmond and Dallas, 1905, fully illustrated.

"The purpose of this series of books is (1) to enable the beginner to recognize readily and to pronounce accurately the various word-forms found in his reading books; (2) to teach the spelling, meaning, and use of words necessary for a sound education; and (3) to bridge the gap between the spelling book and the dictionary.

The phonic drill-lists in Section 1 are intended primarily to aid the beginner in giving to each letter or combination of letters in a word its proper sound-value, and thus to teach him to pronounce words at sight. A drill of fifteen or twenty minutes a day on these lists will put into his possession, during the first three or four months of his school life, the key that will enable him to pronounce with rapidity and ease, and by his unaided efforts, nearly every word found in his reading books.... The gap between the ordinary spelling book and the dictionary is an almost insurmountable obstacle to the pupil, even with the help of a good teacher. Most pupils never learn to use a dictionary intelligently; in consulting it, they seldom get either the correct pronunciation of a word or the meaning suited to its use. The numerous and varied exercises in syllabication and accent, in dictionary practice, in marking letters diacritically, in the use of index-words and phonic key-words, in classifying words, in discriminating between synonyms, in the study of prefixes, suffixes, and roots, are intended to give the pupil an insight into the structure and meaning of words and to make him understand the value and use of a dictionary. The habit of word study thus acquired will grow upon him as he grows older and will solve for him the spelling problem in the only way in which it can ever be solved." [from the Preface]
