"I first read this series of books at age 8-13. .. The children's librarian had a hard time keeping up with me. I loved the characters and their pranks but I especially loved reading about a south that hadn't quite given up pre-Civil War ways of life while coping with a brand new century. The books (as most of that era were) served as sweet treatises teaching lessons and manners to upper-middle and upper class children. .. I started re-reading the books a few months ago and was truly surprised how entertaining and charming they still were, unlike other books that tend to grow larger in memory than they were at first read." [excerpts from a private review]

The Big Little Books, first published during 1932 by the Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin, were small, compact books designed with a captioned illustration opposite each page of text. Other publishers, notably Saalfield, adopted this format after Whitman achieved success with its early titles, priced initially at 10c each, later rising to 15c.

After the first Big Little Book, The Adventures of Dick Tracy, was published (December 1932), numerous titles were sold through Woolworth's and other retail store systems during the 1930s. With a name change to Better Little Books during 1938, the series continued into the 1960s. Variations such as Dime Action Books were produced by other publishers. A few titles were non-fiction works about famous people.
