Shirvan
mid 19th century, 264 x 115 cm, East Caucasus
The dark blue field with multiple abrash displays a repeat of red and white stepped polygons arranged in rows of two to form colour diagonals. The motif is rarely seen in this context. Each polygon encloses a cross composed of slim leaves and surrounded by blossoms. The topmost row of motifs is truncated by the horizontal border. Designs in varying sizes and colours densely cover the field ground. The white main border shows a leaf and calyx design. The late collector purchased this gorgeous Shirvan at Galerie Bausback, Mannheim, more than forty years ago.
BAUSBACK, PETER, Antike Orientteppiche. Brunswick 1978, ill. p. 250
Condition
The lower right corner as well as sections of the lower finish have been restored. Otherwise in good condition.
