Shirvan
late 19th century, 176 x 112 cm, East Caucasus
Four diamonds linked at their tips, divided into four segments by an inner cross in the style of Turkmen guls and decorated with hooks, combine into a large design bar that takes up the whole of the blue field. They are flanked by halved diamonds placed at the sides. The bold S-figures which form a design chain in the main border are abstracted dragons. Whether or not the two different dragon forms alternating regularly bear any gender-specific significance, as stated by some specialists, is a question yet to be resolved.
Condition
All four corners restored. Selvedges replaced in places.
