Sidney Bechet. 1948.
One of the first major jazz saxophonists, as well as a top clarinetist, Bechet performed alongside some major talents throughout his career, including Louis Armstrong. He spent a good portion of his career in Europe, and had his big break performing in the Revue Nègre with Josephine Baker. “When Bechet blew his horn on the opening night of Le Revue Nègre, it was like the walls of Jericho... The house came tumbling down” (Josephine, p. 112). This announcement for a performance in Switzerland bears that same energy: bold abstract shapes embrace Bechet as his clarinet emerges from the spotlight to fill the room with his distinct tone and rich vibrato.
