Sidney Richard Percy, British 1821-1886- Gathering firewood; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'S R Percy 1850' (lower left), 30 x 45.5 cm. Provenance: With Frost and Reed, London.; Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 21 October 1977, lot 7 ('Peasants on a path near Ullswater, Westmorland').; Private Collection. Note: Percy was the son of the painter Edward Williams (1781-1855) and a member of the Williams family of painters (also known as the Barnes School), which included painters George Morland (1763-1804) and James Ward RA (1769-1859). Percy was clearly influenced by the works of his father, with both artists known predominantly as landscape painters, depicting idyllic rural scenes usually including just a few figures.
