Signed 20th C Chinese Bamboo Vessel, Flowers & Foo Dogs

East Asia, China, ca. early 20th century CE. An elaborately carved bamboo vessel of the type traditionally used by scribes for holding calligraphy brushes. The extensive carved imagery includes flowering foliage/trees and mythical foo dogs with sharp claws and expressive visages with bulging eyes and intimidating fangs - as well as a signature and/or inscription on the base. The cylindrical brush pot was made from a generous piece of bamboo that was deeply and finely carved. Quite smooth to the touch, the bamboo/wood has developed a marvelous age patina. A lovely example!
Provenance: ex private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2008

Condition Report: Wood is lightly weathered with some surface fissures that travel down the grain of the wood, especially around the rim and lower body. Signature on underside is partially smeared and difficult to discern. Motifs remain in excellent condition with light deposits.
