Signed A.G. Italian Capodimonte Napoleon Crossing the Alps Composite Sculpture

[ translate ]

Dramatic large-scale Italian Capodimonte-style composite sculpture depicting Napoleon Bonaparte astride a powerful rearing white horse, inspired by the iconic Napoleon Crossing the Alps composition. Napoleon is portrayed in a blue-green military coat and bicorne hat with sash, gloves, boots and sword, while a voluminous rust-colored cloak billows dramatically behind him. The horse is exceptionally animated with raised forelegs, flowing dark mane and tail, modeled musculature and detailed bridle and tack, supported within a naturalistic landscape of a tree trunk, roots and rocky ground. Hand-painted throughout in muted period colors with carefully shaded and textured surfaces. Signed “A.G.” on the naturalistic groundwork and additionally marked “Capodimonte” with a crowned “N” on the reverse of the cloak. The composition is mounted on a substantial molded wood display base accented with a gilt-tone Napoleonic “N” medallion. Constructed of molded composite rather than porcelain. Overall presents well with scattered scuffs, scratches, rubbing and surface wear consistent with age and display. Measures 16.5" H x 10.5" W x 7" D.
