Signed Andrew Johnson Presidential Pardon for James Ventress - This rare historical artifact, acquired from the personal estate of a descendant of the Ventress family, is a Presidential pardon signed by President Andrew Johnson, pardoning James Alexander Ventress for his participation on the Confederate side of the American Civil War. Ventress was a Tennessee-born, Mississippi-residing inventor, planter, and plantation owner, who eventually joined the state legislature. This document is dated August 28th, 1965, and is signed by Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. This two-page artifact features the Great Seal originally designed in 1844, notable for its use of six stars in the eagle's talon instead of 13.
