Autograph letter. Leaf folded in quarters.17.6x22.4 cm (7x8¾"); presented with original postmarked envelope in Optium Museum Acrylic glass frame: 32.5x28.3 cm (12¾x11¼"). paneled with acrylic glass at reverse of frame revealing writing and signature of Elizabeth Custer on reverse of leaf.
An excerpt: "I am so sorry to miss the privilege of meeting Mrs. Roosevelt and the other choice friends you gather about you, but I am going to Washington to do some work pertaining to my husband." Elizabeth Clift Custer was an American author and public speaker, and the wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer. Fearing that her husband was to be made a scapegoat by history, Libbie launched a one-woman campaign to rehabilitate her husband's image. Her assistance to the author of the first Custer biography, Frederick Whittaker, helped enable the rapid production of the popular book, which praised Custer's career and set the tone for future biographers in the decades ahead.
