Sikhote-Alin Meteorite Iron, IIAB Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E) Witnessed Fall: 12 February 1947 10:30 am local time The Sikhote-Alin bolide that exploded and then showered meteorites over Siberia, Russia in 1947 to the amazement of numerous witnesses left tons of material, including complete individuals and "shrapnel" specimens. This enormous example of the former variety weighs a significant 16 kilograms (35 pounds) and features and outstanding "skin" over the entirety of its highly textural surface. Numerous shallow, and some deep, 'thumbprint' regmaglypts cover the rocky visitor from Outer Space that represents an exceedingly large, and visually dramatic, specimen of the popular coarse octahedrite. Sikhote-Alin does not appear in pieces of this size and quality very often, and such a superlative offering is not a rock to be overlooked. A deep, dull "gun metal" gray coloration consistently paints this massive meteorite, and all sides present an equally impressive appearance. Size and form have combined into a treasure. Overall Measurements: 11.02 x 8.66 x 3.54 inches (28.00 x 22.00 x 9.00 cm), weighs 16.26 kilograms (35.84 pounds) [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
