Sikhote-Alin Meteorite Slice Iron, IIAB Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E) Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time At over 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds), this slice of the iconic Sikhote-Alin Meteorite is quite a stunner. The main feature of this large etched slab is the broad and primitive Widmanstätten pattern, which is characteristic of the witnessed Iron fall from Siberia, Russia, that fell in 1947. A coarse, octahedrite variety of meteorite, the pattern due to ribbon-like bands of minerals Taenite and Kamacite, known as lamellae, is a telltale sign of the material. The "floating" and organic-shaped sections of the face of the expansive specimen have a ‘contemporary art’ appeal. A rare Troilite inclusion near the edge of the piece provides an additional attribute to this highly collectible, and rather unusual, example. Measurements: 11.83 x 9.25 x 0.30 inches (30.06 x 23.50 x 0.77 cm), weighs 2,606 grams HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
