Silver Lemon Strainer

[ translate ]

Silver Lemon Strainer, possibly Joseph Veazie, Boston, Massachusetts, late 18th century, shallow circular bowl pierced with concentric circles, molded rim, the shaped flat notched handle with loop and bead ends, back of each handle marked "JV" in a sunken cartouche, and the back of one handle with monogram "H/IM," wd. 10 7/8 in., approx. 4.2 troy oz.

Note: While the Joseph Veazie attribution is preliminary, it is significant to note the similarity of the handle and bowl piercings on this example to one made by Boston silversmith Benjamin Burt, in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and documented in Kathryn C. Buhler's American Silver 1655-1825 in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Volume I (Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, 1972), p. 341, fig. 300.
