Silver trophy inscribed 'Challenge Cup presented by the Right Hon. Walter Lord Forbes to the 1st Administrative Battalion A.R.V. 1867', decorated with medallions depicting soldiers, engraved on the reverse with the names of the winners from 1869 to 1911, stem formed by crossed rifles, circular base engraved with grasswork. Sheffield, 861. Maker: John Harrison & Co. (1,100 g; h. 33 cm) (defects) This trophy was commissioned in 1867 as the Challenge Cup for the shooting competitions of the 1st Administrative Battalion, A.R.V. (Administrative Battalion of Rifle Volunteers), a formation within the Rifle Volunteers movement, the British volunteer corps established in 1859 for home defence and marksmanship training. It was presented by the Right Honourable Walter, 18th Lord Forbes (1798–1868), a former officer of the Coldstream Guards, veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, and a prominent supporter of Britain's volunteer military institutions.
