Simon Bening - Prachtausgabe Das Blumen - Stundenbuch - 1530-1991

The Flowers Book of Hours by Simon Bening.
Facsimile - edition of the illuminated manuscript clm 23 637 from the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
Originated around 1530. A radiant highlight of an art era.
Simon Bening's Flower Book of Hours is one of the most beautiful works of illumination. It impressively demonstrates the high status of Flemish book art in the 16th century. Two special features make this masterpiece stand out among all Books of Hours: firstly, the loose scattered pattern of flowers or birds that adorns each page of text; on the other hand, the many different forms of page design within a manuscript. That is why this work is considered an unsurpassed highlight of its time in its design diversity.
The way in which the artist decorated the text pages of the manuscript with individual motifs is particularly fascinating. Simon Bening liked to experiment and tried out all possible variations; and he did so in a variety that is very rare. The objects have no frame and cast clear shadows on the page. This creates the amazing illusion for the viewer that the small objects are actually on the page. Dragonflies, for example, are particularly impressive; they seem to have been deceived by flowers and have settled there in order to deceive the viewer.
