This painting depicts Madame Vigée Lebrun and her 14-year old daughter sitting under a tree and sketching the cascades. In the distance can be seen Francois Ménageot, director of the French Academy in Rome, and Vigée Lebrun himself. Vigée Lebrun's diary records the scene in great detail.
