Two Maritime Works: Sailing Ship on Calm Seas Three-Master on Calm Seas
Oil on panel (parquetted). Each 29 x 35.5 cm.
Both paintings signed lower right on the driftwood: S. DE VLIEGER.
Both of these maritime scenes were painted between 1640 and 1645, during the latter period of Simon de Vlieger's career. The two related works are emblematic of his style, in which he uses the waves and clouds and the staggered arrangement of the ships to create a sense of depth and achieve a harmonic composition.
These works are registered in the Rijksbureau voor kunsthistorische Dokumentatie under the numbers 237274 and 237275.
