Sin Firmar - Escuela Italiana. Oleo sobre Lienzo. Siglo XVI / XVII. Rey Saul atacando David
Venetian school Oil on canvas. 17th century. Rey Saúl atacando David. Possibly with hand of Pietro de la Vecchia. Dimensions - 94. 5 x 78 cm; 103 x 87 cm with frame. Frame from a subsequent period. Origin: Private collection of a family of bankers. Pietro della Vecchia, also known as Pietro Muttoni (Vicenza, ca. 1603 - Venice, 1678) was an Italian baroque painter. Rated as one of the best Venice painters, specially his religious paintings. Marco Boschini called him “Simia di Zorzon” - imitator of Giorgione- due to his skill to reproduce the works of the Venetian masters, but also praised him for his understanding of the theory of art, probably referring to his mastery of anatomy and perspective, a knowledge that permitted him to open a very well-attended academy to which -among others- attended Gregorio Lazzarini, future master of Giambattista Tiepolo. Influences by Caravaggio and Bernardo Strozzi can be observed in his religious paintings, with a dramatic atmosphere. It presents minor restorations. Relined. Some chipping on the frame.
