The glory of Speldhurst is the Stained glass, by Morris & Co. ...how inventive and versatile Burne-Jones was in his early maturity!

The present lot consists of two designs for the windows of St. Mary's, Speldhurst, conceived circa 1873 by Burne-Jones for Morris & Co. Speldhurst's original medieval church was destroyed by lightning in 1791; a second church, built shortly after, was entirely replaced by the current structure in 1870-1; the stained glass was installed over the following decade.

There is a design in black chalk for another of the windows in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
