Provenance:
Raffaelle Coleman Isaac (1840-1904) dealer in works of art, Liverpool, by 1875, from whom presumed to have been acquired by the grandfather of the late husband of the present owner of a Suffolk country house

In the opinion of Richard Ormond, the present drawing is an early work by Landseer with an authentic signature. He also suggests this is a "presentation" drawing by the young artist seeking patrons.
