The Property of the Marquess of Anglesey from the Private Apartment at Plas Newydd

Sir George Hayter
London, 1792–1781
The Honourable ladies Eleanora (1820–1847) and Constance Paget (1823–1878), daughters of Henry Paget, 2nd Marquess of Anglesey (1797–1869)

signed, inscribed and dated on the reverse: The Honble Ladies Eleanor and Constance Paget / daughters of The Rt Honble The Earl of Uxbridge / painted by George Hayter Esq. principal painter to The Queen. / 1841
oil on board, framed as a roundel
unframed: 35.5 x 40.3 cm.; 14 x 15⅞ in.
framed: 62.6 x 67.4 cm.; 24⅝ x 26½ in.

Condition Report:
The board is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. No significant paint losses are visible to the naked eye, though some scratches on the left hand side, in the sky, have disturbed the paint surface and have caused a slightly pronounced network of craquelure. A couple of other, smaller networks of craquelure are visible in other parts of the painted surface, such as over the hand of the figure on the left, though these are less obvious. Some passages of impasto have survived particularly well, as is exemplified by the goblet held by the figure on the right and on the sleeve decoration of the figure on the left. A few retouchings are visible to the naked eye: these can be found primarily in the sleeve of the figure on the left and in the hair of the figure on the right. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these as retouchings, while also revealing a few others towards the lower margin, on the dress of the figure on the left and in a spot in the lower right sky. The goblet on the right fluoresces differently under ultraviolet light to other parts of the painting, though this seems more likely owing to differences in the compositions of the original paint colours used, rather than being retouchings. Overall, the painting is in good condition. It presents well and is ready to hang.
