Sir Jacob Epstein KBE, British/American 1880-1959 – Sunita and her son, c.1920s; pencil on paper, signed lower left ‘Epstein’, 46.4 x 54.2 cm (ARR) Note: One of the most important sculptors in Britain of the 20th century, Sir Jacob Epstein’s works adorn public sites, including Coventry Cathedral, Hyde Park, London and the Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris. The artist created highly sensitive works, characterised by highly textured surfaces and expressive, heavy features. This sculptural approach can be seen in the present work in the sheer presence of the both figures. Sunita Devi initially posed for Sir Matthew Smith, before being meeting Epstein, who quickly invited her and her son to live with him. The pair would become the subjects for important sculptures by the artist, including ‘Sunita, 1925’ (Manchester Art Gallery), ‘Sunita’ (Royal College of Psychiatrists) and ‘New York Madonna and Child, 1926-27’ (The New Art Gallery Walsall).
