Condition Report:
The paper is laid down onto a canvas, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. The picture presents well and is ready to hang. Some of the darker tones in the landscape seem to have sunken and lost some definition with age. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by a layer of varnish and only reveals areas of restoration in the rocky landscape centre right. The picture is in overall good condition.

This work depicts a scene from Walter Scott's Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field, a historical romance in verse published in 1808. Sir John James Steuart was a 19th-century Scottish landowner, artist and neighbour of Walter Scott in the Scottish Borders.
