First awarded in 1955 as the Vernon Rice Awards, the 'Drama Desk Award' moniker was first introduced for the 1963/1964 iteration. The Real Thing won Outstanding New Play over Glengarry Glen Ross and Noises Off, of which Sir Michael Codron produced the latter in the same year.
