Sir Stanley Spencer CBE RA, British 1891-1959 - Studies for Domestic Scenes, c.1924; sepia wash over pencil on paper, each of the six scenes annotated by the artist on a separate, original backboard, 41 x 49.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: 25 Blythe Road, London, Harry Moore-Gwyn: British and Continental pictures online, 8th July 2014, lot 91; private collection Note: the backboard is annotated '1. Hilda airing clothes, me looking through clothes horse 2. Hilda having dress tucked in 3. Hilda & I feeding 4. Hilda & I at tailors 5. Hilda Sewing, me looking on 6. Hilda showing me winter' The present work is a celebration of domesticity and Spencer's life with his first wife Hilda Carline. The scenes demonstrate Spencer’s personal religious belief in the centrality of the divine in everyday life, based around his beloved hometown of Cookham. The work may relate to four large mural designs Spencer made around 1924 for a planned 'Church House', that would chronicle their relationship, each conceived in six panels. One design in this work relates to a drawing in the Stanley Spencer Museum, 'The Month of March – Dressmaking, 1926.' The fine lines and precision of the drawing shows the influence of his time at the Slade under the tutelage of Henry Tonks between 1908 and 1912. However, in this work we see Spencer’s more fluid, curvaceous approach to form, that brought both humour and pathos to his work.
