Six items from a Meissen porcelain déjeuner with children

Comprising coffee pot, teapot, milk jug with original lids (that of the milk jug slightly too large), and two cups and saucers. All pieces decorated with scenes of children in landscapes within large lilac and yellow surrounds hung with floral swags. Blue crossed swords mark with star (the saucers without), cancellation marks on all pieces, blue I (milk jug). Minor localised restorations. H of coffee pot with lid 15.5 cm.
Circa 1780, decor attributed to Johann George Loehnig.

The particularly delicate painting can be attributed to Johann George Loehnig (1743 - 1806). He was one of the "Historien und Genies Mahlern 1. Classe" in Meissen between 1764 and 1770. In 1786 he was still listed as a "figure painter of the most exquisite class" in the manufactory's list of painters. The models for the lush and expressive putti were mostly provided by Johann Eleazar Zeissig (1737 - 1806), called Schenau, who in turn was inspired by François Boucher (1703 - 1770).

Provenance

Collection of Renate and Tono Dreßen, acquired in 1980.

Literature

"Illustrated in cat. Blütenlese, Berlin-Munich 2018, no. 127.
Cf. cat. Triumph der blauen Schwerter, Leipzig 2010, cat. no. 486.
See also a small coffee pot with the painter's signature in the Porzellansammlung des SKD (inv. no. PE 1564 a, b)."
