SLATE PLAQUE WITH THE DEPICTION OF SAINT MARGARET THE VIRGIN.

Date: Early 17th century.
Maker/Designer: Veronese School, circle of Pasquale Ottino (1578-1630).
Technique: Oil painting on slate. Wooden frame.
Description: The martyr in moving posture standing on top of the dragon with her feet, cross and palm
branch in her hands. In the background scene of the saint's beheading.
Measurement: Without frame 25x20.5cm.
Condition B.

Provenance:
Private collection Norht Rhine-Westphalia.

Verona was the artistic centre for the use of slate as a picture carrier for oil paintings. All grand artists of Verona from Felice Brusasorci, Alessandro Turchi und Marcantonio Bassetti to Pasquale Ottino used the special expressice qualitied of the black glossy material from the 16th century onwards, which was appeared to be made especially for dramatic scenes.
