Smuts Character Jug | Royal Doulton England | Toby Jug

[ translate ]

A rare Royal Doulton character jug / toby mug of Field Marshal Smuts. This large jug was modeled by Harry Fenton and hand-painted in England. It was produced between 1946-1948 and numbers D6198.Jan Christian Smuts (1870-1950) was a great South African statesman. During the Boer war he fought as a guerrilla against the British, leading the daring, 1901 raid, into the Cape Colony. Later he was an Ally during both World Wars despite great opposition from many South African statesmen. He became Premier in 1919 and Prime Minister in 1939. As a statesman he contributed to both the founding of the League of Nations and the United Nations. He endeavored to promote racial harmony back home but the racial prejudices of many of his countrymen served to oust him in the election of 1948 which favored the Afrikaaner National Party and begun the apartheid era. This delightful character jug depicts Smuts in his Field Marshal's uniform with the South African emblem, the Springbok forming the handle. The jug was only issued for two years as it was withdrawn when he lost the election in 1948 and has become quiet rare and highly sought after. Originally for every jug sold one Shilling was donated to Mrs. Smuts Comfort Fund for South African Troops. Smuts stands approximately 6 1/2 inches tall (large) and is in superb condition (no cracks or chips). There is some crazing mostly on the underside of the hat (as expected on a jug of this age) and does not in our opinion detract from this fine example. Also for the sake of disclosure there is a small firing flaw to the rim of Smut's hat (we have found this flaw on a number of examples of Smuts jugs so it apparently had something to do with that mold/batch).
