Snuffbox made from a keluak seed (Pangium edule), China, 20th century
The Chinese artisan took advantage of the fruit’s natural shape and its original hollow structure to create an extremely delicate hollowed-out form. The shell has an asymmetrical shape and features beautifully branching veins on its surface. The base bears a large, elliptical hilum scar left in its natural state. Beautiful patina from use. Coral stopper.
