Sofia Heywood Sampler Winchendon MA

[ translate ]

This Needlework Family Register of the Heywood Family from Winchendon, MA was stitched c. 1833 by 15 year old Sophia E. Heywood. Silk thread on a very fine linen cloth, the Register includes the birth and marriage dates of Rial Heywood and Betsy Palmer, and chronicles the births of 7 Heywood children and includes the death of the youngest child, John. There is a very elaborate floral and vine border, very similar in style to borders I have seen on other samplers/registers from the Winchendon area (north-central Massachusetts) of the period. Sophia has included aa green saw-tooth frame around the genealogical information. The piece measures 17 ½” x 14 ¾” and is framed in a simple contemporary narrow black frame (20” x 17”); there is also a narrow green mat bordering the linen.; The Register is in very fine condition with rich color and shiny silk thread. The linen backing is very fine (and probably was fairly expensive at the time): it has some very scattered light foxing and some light bleeding in the center, and there is 1 tiny-tiny hole just above the ‘o’ in Sophia’s name. The stitch-work is both elegant and complete.; There is some limited genealogy available with information on Rial Heywood (Sophia’s father) and Betsy Palmer. Sophia married Elisha Mirick Stuart. I have always suspected there is some connection between the Heywoods listed in this Register and the Heywood Wakefield Furniture people of Gardner, MA (neighboring town to Winchendon), but have never been able to successfully make the connection.
