Songhor Long Rug

[ translate ]

Dated 1273 = 1857 AD, 358 x 97 cm, West Persia, Hamadan region

A rare long rug woven in the Songhor area. Although it presents the typical Hamadan structure (one cotton weft after each row of knots), its field design of colourful shrubs is drawn in the style of Kolyai rugs. The wide, camel outer surround is undecorated except for eleven small flowering plants, two botehs, one comb motif and a date repeated twice at the top left. – Very well preserved, full pile except for a number of corroded black-brown sections, original selvedges, minimally reduced ends, slight and partially restored moth damage.

RIPPON BOSWELL, A 64, 20.11.2004, #24
