Sonia Gechtoff (American, 1926–2018) was a painter and printmaker associated with Bay Area Abstract Expressionism before relocating to New York in 1958. Gechtoff built her abstractions through forceful drawing, using broad arcs and repeated strokes to form circular, winglike, and architectural shapes. Gechtoff gained national recognition during the 1950s and exhibited alongside leading Abstract Expressionists of the period. Her work is represented in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Icon II, 1963, lithograph from stone in dark blue and black on Arches paper, from the portfolio 6 Icons. Printed by John Dowell Jr. and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. The composition places a cluster of curving leaf- and flame-like forms inside a broad oval ring, surrounded by a vigorously worked dark-blue field and enclosed within a fine rectangular border. Inscribed in pencil “Tamarind Imp. Icon II” lower left and signed and dated “Gechtoff ’63” lower right, with the Tamarind workshop and John Dowell Jr. printer’s blindstamps. One of nine Tamarind impressions outside the numbered edition of 20; the complete portfolio comprised six plates, a title page and colophon. Sheet measures approximately 18 × 15 inches. Light overall toning and minor handling wear, with two tape hinges or remnants along the upper verso; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
