South Netherlandish cabinet - Renaissance - Oak - Dated 1631
High-quality cabinet from the Southern Netherlands. Also called the Catholic Netherlands. Probably made in Antwerp. A highlight of the furniture art of that time. Dated 1631. The ornamentation is directly borrowed from the Italian Renaissance. This is a highlight as a cultural asset. Beautiful patina and beautiful wear. Knorren (drop-shaped figures) in the hood. Three statues crown the pilasters. In the middle a woman flanked by two men. Acanthus tendrils ending in dolphin heads, mascarons, and angel heads. Beautiful quarter sawn oak used. As a result, you see those characteristic spots in the wood, also called mirrors. Because the saw side was aimed straight at the heart of the tree, the food vessels come out nicely. They mirror a bit like the mineral cat's eye. Also the back. The cabinet has undergone some (minor) restorations, which is not a problem for a solid piece of furniture of its age. - nice low size: 190 cm high
