Southern Federal Figured Mahogany Sideboard
Circa 1820, Midlands of South Carolina, likely Columbia. The piece having a rectangular top with nicely shaped backsplash leading into scrolling ends above bow front case housing one long drawer at the center flanked by two smaller drawers all above lower cabinets having very nicely figured grain to the door fronts and all flanked by reeded ends above a turned wood foot. Secondary wood is poplar, yellow pine and white pine with what also looks to possibly be suite gum. H53" W67" D22 1/2" This board is accompanied by an original hand typed letter from Charleston Museum Director E. Milby Burton dated May 24, 1951. The letter states that the piece is likely local in origin to Columbia, SC and thanks the owner Mr and Mrs W.L. Ruff of 1502 Wellington Dr Columbia SC for having Mr. Burton by to look over their collection. The notes and congratulates the current owners on their ownership of such a fine piece. Sold from the collection of a Charleston, South Carolina lady and gentleman.
