Southern Netherlandish, probably Antwerp, circa 1500
Southern Netherlandish, probably Antwerp, circa 1500
Relief with the Entombment
oak, with traces of gilding and polychromy
59 by 51cm., 23¼ by 20⅛in.
Catalogue Note:
This moving relief with the Entombment finds parallels in Antwerp sculpture from the late 15th century. In particular, the arrangement of the figures recalls a relief of the same subject, described as Antwerp, circa 1480-1490, in the Musée du Louvre (op. cit., p. 120, fig. 4), which similarly shows the Virgin leaning over Christ’s body with her arms crossed, and one of the Maries in the top right corner looking to her left with her hands folded in prayer. The present relief is distinguished by a high degree of individuality in the features and expressions of the protagonists. The figure of Mary Magdalene, clad in a richly ornamented headdress and depicted opening her jar of ointment, is particularly refined.
