Southern SAKALAVA, Madagascar.
Southern SAKALAVA, Madagascar. Eroded monoxyl carved wood, with beautiful grain weathered by the elements. Sculpture depicting a large figure riding his mount, a rare depiction of a horseman. The figure strikes a hieratic pose, with long arms pressed against his slender body; his head is adorned with curly hair, and his triangular face bears features softened by time—only the deep-set eyes remain, their powerful gaze seeming to peer into infinity. This masterful funerary work, symbolizing the passage into the afterlife, displays great sensitivity and presence. Height: 173 cm
