Souvenir Spoon of the Spanish American War, 1898
Original antique souvenir spoon created in 1898. The relief inside the spoon's bowl shows the explosion of USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, on February 15, 1898. [This event led to the U.S. intervention in the Cuban War of Independence]. On top of the handle Uncle Sam gives President McKinley a bill,there is a date March 9, 1898 under this picture; and a band along the handle with, "50,000,000 For The Defense" [On March 9, Congress passed a law allocating fifty million dollars to build up military strength]. The spoon is marked "Souvenir Company, N.Y."
