Souvenir from Wembley N Mandela 70th B'day Tribute

Nelson MANDELA (1918-2013).

Nelson MANDELA 70th Birthday Tribute. An original color-printed section/poster removed from the front of the stage area after the concert held on 11th June 1988 at Wembley Stadium, London. England: June, 1988. Plastic sheet (36 x 26inches; 914 x 661mm), adhesive to verso, the majority of the verso now covered with pages from the newspapers of the day, which were ‘liberated’ from a wastepaper bin outside the stadium. Condition: generally excellent, a few small splits to margins, some pinholes.

Provenance: collected by the previous owner who attended the Wembley Concert, on 11 June 1988 (see the colored photocopies included in this lot).

Together with: 4 colored photocopies of images from the ‘Free Nelson Mandela Festival Concert Book’ the cover, an image of a panel being put in place, the original owner (and friends and family) arriving at the front of the stage, an aerial view of the concert underway with a note exhibiting the ‘Approx position Poster taken from’; a shipping tube with relevant information on it.

The Nelson MANDELA 70th Birthday Tribute was "biggest and most spectacular pop-political event of all time, a more political version of Live Aid with the aim of raising consciousness rather than just money." (Robin Denselow), and seems to have been instrumental in speeding up Nelson Mandela's release from imprisonment in
