Spain - 18th century - Blunderbuss
Spanish blunderbuss musket with a miquelet-style lock plate ("patillas") converted to percussion. Faceted barrel (octagonal) , then round. Marked ‘DE ACERO’ which means: forged steel barrel, a sign of quality. Hallmark with two stars, one large and one small, but identification has not been possible. Mechanism in very good working order: with the hammer cocked, the lock plate hits the pierced cap with force. The rod goes far into the barrel (22 cm) but the chamber seems to have gotten clogged (the opening does not go through to the light) . The butt is made of walnut wood, decorated with a pattern of crossbones. Traces of burn-marks on the wood, near the barrel and the firing mechanism. Barrel length: 25 cm Length of rod: 31 cm Total length: 57 cm calibre at the muzzle: 40 mm Weapon in good condition, no fragility or cracks detected.
