Isabel II Proof 20 Reales 1850 M-CL PR65 NGC, Madrid mint, KM592.1, Dav-332, Cal-591, O'Connor-pg. 118 (R7). A sublime Proof rarity representing the first example of this general type which we have seen in over 10 years, the last being an AU55 (non-Proof) example that sold in our April 2010 CICF Signature Auction #3009 (Lot 22881). We have never before encountered this issue in Proof. The only similar examples we have handled since are of the same date but a different type--Isabel's bust varying in its design and style and the reverse bearing the more common pillar depiction with the denomination of 20 Reales at the bottom in place of the mint and assayer seen on this issue. Though NGC does not provide census details on the page for this coin, a review of their general census shows no other Proofs meeting or exceeding this grade for any of the 1850 issues certified to date. Further, we cannot confirm whether any other examples of the present type have been certified. However, this may well be the only example at NGC, and no others have been seen by PCGS to date. The offering thus represents a singular opportunity, and the appeal of its uncontested rarity is only further elevated by its praiseworthy appearance and technical state. An original steel patina overlies decidedly glassy surfaces, while the reverse "steals the show" by virtue of a profound gold and blue-green iridescence that clings to the ornate features. With only a hint of friction capping the assigned grade and no distractions worthy of mention present, this elite gem will confer upon its future owner a status that eludes even many ardent and lifelong collectors of the Spanish series. Ex. Huntington Collection
