Bernardo Vicente de Galvez y Madrid, 1st Viscount of Galveston, 1st Count of Galvez (1746 -1786) was a Spanish colonial military officer who served as governor of Spanish Louisiana and Cuba, and later as Viceroy of New Spain. He supported the American Colonies in the Revolutionary War by leading Spanish forces against the British in Florida, defeating them at Pensacola in 1781. As a result, Florida was ceded to Spain in the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Galveston, Texas, was named after him.
