Spanish or Italian school, XVIII century.
"Allegory of Faith".
Oil on glass.
Period frame.
Measurements: 24.5 x 17 cm; 28.5 x 22 cm (frame).
A woman with sumptuous attire holds a sword with the left hand and a chalice with the other one on which a Eucharistic host appears. It is an allegory of faith, a theme that lacked a canonical or unique way of being represented. Here the sword refers to the victory over sin, and the chalice to Christ's sacrifice for humanity. Painters such as Vermeer endowed the allegory with other attributes besides the chalice, such as the globe.
