Sprengel, Matthias Christian (1746-1803). Allgemeines historisches Taschenbuch...der Revolution von Nord-America. Berlin: Haude & Spener, [1784].

16mo (127 x 83 mm). Folding map with hand-coloring, 18 engraved plates, 3 hand-colored. (Lacking lower half portion of folding map, color offsetting to illustration leaf opposite that depicting American flag, spotting to title-page.) Contemporary patterned wrappers (spine significantly worn, penciled bibliographic notes to interior wrappers). Provenance: early ownership signature on title-page Bibliothek D. Stadt Museum, Salzburg (institutional stamps throughout).

"...THE FIRST ACCURATE PUBLISHED VIEW OF THE AMERICAN FLAG..." (REESE).

Allgemeines historisches Taschenbuch... was printed in Berlin in 1784 - three years after the end of the Revolutionary War. It is notable for being one of the first histories of the American Revolution ever published, with 18 images depicting Stamp Act protests, the Boston Massacre, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the surrender of New York, and finally, General Cornwallis's surrender to George Washington at Yorktown. Though famous for its inaccuracies (particularly its depictions of Native Americans and certain events associated with the Revolutionary War), the work is significant for being among the first to tell the full story of America's founding to a non-English speaking readership.

Church 1207-2 (describes 3 issues, priority undetermined, with present matching "the Bancroft copy"); Howes S846 (describes 4 issues, priority undetermined, with this being the third listed); Reese, Revolutionary Hundred 77 ("the first published appearance of the American flag"); Sabin 89755 (calls this the second edition); Wolfenbuttel, The New World in the Treasures of an Old European Library, 228-9 ("First depiction in color of the American flag... The first summary account of the American Revolution to appear in Germany after the war").
