Standing Buddha with open cloak
STANDING BUDDHA WITH OPEN CLOAK.
Origin: Burma/Myanmar.
Dynasty: Pagan period (839-1287).
Date: 12th/13th c.
Technique: Bronze with shiny, dark, partly green patina, which has built over a longer period.
Description: In the case of this slender, slightly elongated Buddha, the sogyari garment covers both
shoulders and widens downward. The lower hem is stylized in fine, lively folds, some of
which are corroded and damaged. The upper hem of the antaravasakha robe, which covers the
lower body, is set as a fine relief line at the narrow hip with an indicated navel.
Measurement: Height without base 30.5cm.
Frame/Pedestal: Mounted on a base.
Condition B. Right foot missing, neck newly attached, left hand damaged. Typical casting flaws.
This figure shows characteristics of the Pala style, but due to its quality it was certainly made in the Pagan territory. Typical for Pagan is also the design of the hands in Vitarka mudra and the Ushnisha .
