Star Lot: A stunning large Maurice Canning Wilks (Irish. 1910–1984) A breathtaking original 'Maurice Canning Wilks' oil on board painting depicting an Irish Landscape titled 'Co. Donegal'. Features the titular impressionistic landscape. Rendered in an elaborate rich lush green palette with shades of yellows and blues in gestural brushstrokes. Signed 'Maurice C Wilks' bottom right. Housed in a wonderfully elaborate wooden gilt frame. Wilks is a beloved 20th century Irish artist whose similar works have fetched into the thousands at Adam's last year. Titled and also signed to verso.

Born in Belfast in 1911, he educated at the Malone Public School while also attending night classes at the Belfast College of Art. While attending college he was awarded the Dunville Scholarship allowing him to attend day classes. After college, Wilks resided in Cushendun, in the Glens of Antrim. Wilks's early landscapes were mainly of the Irish northern and western counties including Donegal, Antrim and Kerry. He was inspired by the Irish landscapes of James Humbert Craig. He exhibited a t the RHA and RUA, both organisations he is now a member of and his paintings are held in Ulster Museum and Limerick City Art Gallery.
