Star & Scrap Patchwork Quilt

70 x 78 inches. Back shows several stains. A handmade patchwork textile featuring a repeating pattern of twenty-five square blocks. Each block is centered with a large, four-pointed star in solid red fabric, bordered by a narrow white frame. The background of each block is constructed in a radial, sunburst-style arrangement using a wide variety of scrap cotton and cotton-blend fabrics. This diverse assortment of mid-20th-century textiles includes various ginghams, floral calicoes, polka dots, stripes, and solid colors. A border featuring a blue and red geometric lattice print accents the top and bottom edges. The quilt is finished with a white fabric binding. The reverse side consists of a single panel of solid white fabric. Construction involves dense hand-quilting in a grid pattern across the backgrounds and contour stitching following the star motifs. The batting is thin, consistent with utility-style bedding of the mid-20th century. No maker labels, signatures, or marks are present on the textile.
