These statuettes generically called Iginga and specifically Sakimatwematwe when they have multiple heads
served as part of the Bwami cult, a semi-secret initiatory society that organized the structure social welfare and ensured the stability of the Lega community.
The Lega are a Bantu forest people of Central Africa, established mainly in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), east of the Lwalaba River (the Congo River), up to altitude in the mountains Mitumba, in the provinces of South Kivu and Maniema.
The Sakimatwematwe is the initiate who sees in all directions, who observes what others do not even distinguish. (read on this subject the text of Marguerite de Sabran : "Sakimatwematwe, the Face of Knowledge" in Sotheby Arts of Africa and Oceania 14 dec 2016, (lot 44).
