Statue - Sakassou region - Baule - Côte d'Ivoire
CHARACTERISTICS Height: 19cm Material: wood PROVENANCE: Private European collection, it is offered for sale by descent. DESCRIPTION: Sculpted with dynamism, and carrying within itself the idea of a movement, this feminine effigy is camped on semi-bent legs. The plump buttocks give the character a pronounced arch, the curve of which corresponds to that of the calves. The tapered bust is adorned, front and back, with ritual marks. The chest, hanging and slender, is as if suspended, weighing down on the round shoulders. The slender arms, with their elbows bent almost at a right angle, make up a pattern of beautiful inventiveness. Higher, the head inscribed on a powerful and scarified neck, this statue with the discreet movement imparting great vigor to the whole. The thick ritual patina that covers the head, however, lets appreciate the neat features of the face, and the importance given, as is customary, to the hairstyle.
